Carbon Footprint & Net Zero

Carbon Footprint & Net Zero

| Date & time: June 20th, 14:30 pm (CET)| Place:  POLITÉCNICA University of Madrid, School of Civil Engineering, ETSICCP, Retiro Building.| Language: English| Participants: University students of all disciplines and levels

The upcoming session titled “Carbon Footprint & Net Zero” is designed to achieve several key objectives. The primary aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the carbon footprint and its relevance to both the corporate world and financial institutions. Participants will be introduced to the concept of Net Zero and the process of decarbonization. Additionally, the session will explore the impacts of the carbon footprint on the circular economy, equipping participants with the tools necessary to calculate the financed carbon footprint for a financial entity across its various products and portfolios, including credit portfolios, fixed income, and equity.

Main Content: The session will begin with an introduction to the primary concepts related to the carbon footprint. This includes an in-depth explanation of what the carbon footprint is, with detailed coverage of each scope (Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3). Key reference methodologies and the regulatory impacts associated with carbon footprints will also be discussed.

The focus will then shift to the corporate world, where participants will learn about the specifics of the carbon footprint within corporate settings. This segment will cover the main reference methodologies and standards, regulatory frameworks, and best practices. Similarly, the session will address the specifics of the carbon footprint in financial institutions, including methodologies, standards, regulations, and best practices.

The session will also highlight the synergies between the circular economy and the carbon footprint. Participants will gain insights into how these two concepts intersect and support each other.

In addition, the session will delve into the concept of Net Zero and decarbonization. This part will cover major global initiatives and commitments, providing practical examples from both the corporate world and financial institutions.

Workshop: Following the theoretical part of the session, participants will engage in a practical workshop designed to apply their newly acquired knowledge. The workshop will focus on calculating both the operational carbon footprint (covering Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3) and the financed carbon footprint (by portfolio and by product).

To participate effectively, students will need a computer with Excel access. NFQ will provide essential materials, including balance sheet information of a financial entity, activity data, and the necessary emission factors for calculating both operational and financed footprints.

At the end of the workshop, participants will present their results, sharing their key conclusions and critical perspectives with the rest of the group. This collaborative exercise aims to reinforce learning and encourage a deeper understanding of the concepts discussed.
